What does botox actually do?

The short answer

Botox is the everyday word for an injection of botulinum toxin. It works on muscle. A measured dose placed in a chosen muscle softens how hard that muscle pulls, which eases the creases a repeated expression leaves behind and takes some of the bulk out of a muscle that has grown strong from use. Rewind describes the aim as a face that still moves and a jaw line that reads softer.

Nothing is filled, lifted or removed here. If the face has lost volume or the skin itself has descended, this injection is the wrong instrument, and the surgeon says so at the consultation before any prescription for units is written.

Which areas does Rewind treat with botox?

The Korean price list at Rewind is written per area, and so is the plan. Four groups cover almost every request that arrives from abroad; hyperhidrosis of the underarms and the temple muscle sit on the same list as separate per-area items and are quoted the same way.

How the plan is built

How is a botox dose decided?

Two faces with the same forehead line can need different injections, because the muscles underneath pull in different patterns. Published work on the glabellar complex sorts patients into distinct contraction patterns and matches the injection points to each one. That is the level at which the plan is made here: pattern first, then sites, then units.

01Read

The muscle is examined while it moves

You are asked to frown, raise the brows, smile and clench. What the surgeon is looking for is which muscle is doing the work and how far the pull travels. A line that is already etched into resting skin is a different problem from a line that appears only on movement, and the plan says so.

02Units

Dose is counted in units, per area

The clinic quotes wrinkle areas individually and the jaw muscle in plans of fifty or one hundred units. Body areas such as the trapezius are written in one-hundred and two-hundred unit plans. Rewind states that the dose is set to the individual structure of each patient, which is the reason the same area can carry a different number on two different charts.

03Wear-off

The effect is temporary by design

Rewind publishes a duration of three to six months for this injection. Movement returns gradually as the muscle recovers, which is what makes the treatment adjustable: the next session can be dosed up, dosed down or moved to a different point based on what the first one did.

04Bulk

A bulky muscle is not a crease

Jaw slimming works through a different mechanism from wrinkle softening. Studies that followed masseter injections with ultrasound and electromyography measured the change in muscle thickness itself over the months after treatment. Expect the timeline of a jaw plan to be read in months, and the timeline of a forehead plan in weeks.

Why have an injection like this at a plastic surgery clinic?

An injection is easy to buy anywhere in Gangnam. What is harder to buy is someone who will tell you that the dose you came in asking for is the wrong answer to the face you actually have.

01Diagnosis

The person who injects is the person who operates

Dr. Choi sees every patient himself. Because his working day also includes lifting surgery, he can separate a muscle problem from a volume problem from a skin problem at the first appointment, and he will name which one you have before any product is opened.

02Restraint

The smallest dose that does the work

Over-treatment shows in a face that has stopped moving, and it lasts as long as the treatment does. The plan here starts low in areas where expression carries meaning, and the result is reviewed once it has settled; a top-up on request is declined until that review.

03Record

Your chart carries the last plan forward

Units, points and your own report of how long the effect held are written down, so a repeat visit begins from your own history. International patients are supported in their own language from the first message.

Rewind runs entirely by appointment, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday until 19:00 and Saturday until 16:00, which is the window most visiting patients plan around. You are examined by the medical director, the areas and units are agreed, the injection is given in the treatment room on the fourth or fifth floor of the Richro Building, and you leave able to do the rest of your day.

Who is a botox plan suited to?

Usually a reasonable fit

  • Expression lines that deepen on movement while the resting skin is still smooth
  • A lower face that reads square because the chewing muscle has built up
  • Shoulder or calf lines you would like softened without an operation
  • A short stay in Seoul, where recovery time is the limiting factor

Discussed before anything is booked

  • Lines already etched at rest: the muscle can be quieted, but the crease itself needs a different treatment
  • Hollow temples or flattened cheeks, where the complaint is lost volume and not muscle pull
  • Heavy brows or eyelid skin that already sits low, since relaxing the forehead can add to the heaviness
  • Pregnancy, breastfeeding, a neuromuscular condition, infection at the injection site, or a recent injection in the same area elsewhere

Refusal is part of the consultation. When the examination points to descended tissue and the request was for an overactive muscle, Dr. Choi says that plainly and explains what the surgical options would involve, including what they would cost you in recovery.

Aftercare

What are the rules after a botox injection?

Rewind's written aftercare for this injection is short and specific. Most of it concerns the first two days, and the reason is mechanical: you are trying not to move the product away from where it was placed.

Carry on as normal
Daily activity is possible immediately. The clinic reports little swelling or pain after this injection.
Day 1–2
Hands off, and stay cool
No strong massage or pressure on the treated area. Heavy drinking and hot, humid places are avoided for one to two days.
Early weeks
Let the effect settle
Movement softens gradually. Report anything uneven while the effect is settling, so the next plan can correct for it.
Month 3–6
Movement returns
The published duration is three to six months. Re-treatment is planned from what the last dose did, not from a fixed calendar.

Known risks include bruising, swelling and tenderness at the injection point, headache, temporary heaviness or drooping of a brow or eyelid, asymmetry of expression, and, where the injection is placed near the gland or the neck, a dry mouth or an altered swallow. These are reasons to report a symptom early, and reasons to tell the doctor about every injection you have had in the same area.

How long does botox last at Rewind?
The clinic publishes three to six months. Where a result sits in that range depends on the muscle treated, the dose it received and how the area is looked after. Patients who report the effect fading early are usually re-examined before the dose is changed.
What is the difference between botox and a filler?
Botulinum toxin acts on muscle and softens a pull. Hyaluronic acid filler adds volume where volume has gone. A forehead line that only appears on movement is a muscle question; a hollow under the eye is a volume question. Many plans use both, for different areas.
Which areas can I have treated in one visit?
Rewind's list covers forehead, glabella, outer eye, chin, the jaw muscle, the submandibular gland, the trapezius and the calves, with hyperhidrosis and the temple muscle quoted separately. How many of those are treated on one visit is a decision the doctor makes after examining you.
What does a plan of 50 or 100 units mean?
Units are how botulinum toxin is measured. The jaw muscle is listed in fifty-unit and one-hundred-unit plans and the trapezius in one-hundred and two-hundred unit plans, because a bigger muscle needs more product spread across more points. Your own number is set to your anatomy.
Will my face still move normally?
That is the stated aim, and it is a question of dose. Rewind's plan starts conservatively in areas where expression carries meaning, and reviews the result afterwards. A dose that is too high shows as a face that has stopped moving, and it stays that way for the life of the treatment.
Can I go back to work or sightseeing the same day?
Yes. The clinic states that normal daily activity is possible immediately, with little swelling or pain. Avoid strong massage or pressure on the treated area, and skip heavy drinking and hot, humid places for one to two days.
Does the injection hurt, and is anaesthesia used?
Rewind does not publish an anaesthesia protocol for this treatment, so nothing is promised about it here. Comfort options are discussed with the doctor before the session begins, and sensation differs between areas: a jaw injection and a forehead injection do not feel the same.
What can go wrong after a botulinum toxin injection?

How is jaw slimming with an injection different from jaw surgery?

How soon can the treatment be repeated?
