Laser hair removal: what the beam is aimed at, and what it cannot reach

The short answer

Laser hair removal aims light at the pigment inside a hair and the follicle it grows from. The pigment absorbs that light, turns it into heat, and the heat damages the structures that would have regrown the hair. Rewind runs the treatment on a single platform, named on the clinic's own rate sheet as Clarity, and sells it by body area: one visit at a time, or a course of five, with separate columns for women and men.

Everything priced on this page comes from that rate sheet. The clinic publishes no session count, no anaesthetic protocol and no appointment length for this menu, so none of the three is stated here. They belong to the consultation, where your hair colour, skin tone and the size of the field are in front of the doctor.

The limitation is built into the biology. A follicle only responds while it is actively growing, and at any given moment a good share of the hair on any patch of skin is resting instead. One pass therefore reaches a fraction of the follicles in the field, and the ones that were dormant that day grow on untouched. That single fact is the reason hair removal is sold as a course everywhere in the world, and the reason a clinic that promises a finished result from one appointment should be read carefully.

The vocabulary in the published literature is worth borrowing. Papers on this treatment measure long-term hair reduction: fewer hairs, finer hairs, slower regrowth, assessed months after a course. That is a real and durable change, and it is a different claim from the one the advertising usually makes. Rewind's international pages keep the literature's wording because the gap between the two claims is where disappointed patients come from.

The rate sheet is organised twice over: first by patient, women and men in separate columns, then by field. Nothing on it is sold as a vague package with an unnamed list of zones inside. You pick a field, you see its rate, and a full-body plan is defined in writing as a specific group of those fields put together.

Men pay more than women for several of the same fields on this sheet, and the reason is physical. Beard and torso hair is usually coarser and rooted deeper than the hair on a woman's forearm, and a coarser, deeper target generally asks for more energy and more passes to produce the same visible change. The sheet is simply reflecting the work involved. It is not a different treatment and it is not a different device.

How a hair removal laser works, wavelength by wavelength

Four things decide whether a session does anything useful: what absorbs the light, which wavelength is chosen, when in the growth cycle you happen to be treated, and how the skin is protected while all of it happens.

01The target

Melanin in the shaft is what absorbs the pulse

The pigment that makes hair dark is the absorber. Pale, grey and fine blond hair carries very little of it, and those hairs respond poorly to every laser on the market. A consultation worth having says so before a course is sold. The ideal contrast has always been dark hair sitting in lighter skin, because then the target absorbs far more than the skin around it.

02The wavelengths

755 nanometres and 1064 nanometres do different jobs

The platform named on Rewind's sheet is built around two wavelengths. A 755 nm alexandrite beam is absorbed strongly by melanin, which makes it efficient on fine and light-to-medium coloured hair in fair skin. A 1064 nm Nd:YAG beam travels deeper and is absorbed far less by the pigment in the epidermis, and that is precisely the property studied when researchers have treated deeper skin phototypes. Comparative trials have run the two head to head in the same patients.

03The cycle

Only the actively growing follicles are reachable that day

Hair cycles through growth, regression and rest, and the follicles in each phase are not synchronised across a patch of skin. A pulse damages what is growing and leaves the resting follicles for the next appointment, so sessions are spaced weeks apart to let a new cohort enter the growth phase. Treating again too soon is a way of paying twice for the same follicles.

04The finish line

A course ends in reduction, and reduction needs topping up

Systematic reviews of lasers and light sources report long-term reduction after a completed course, with regrowth that is thinner and slower than what was there before. Some hair returns. Maintenance appointments at long intervals are the normal way that is handled, and no clinic can promise you a particular number of them in advance.

What settles a hair removal plan at Rewind

Hair removal is the treatment most often sold by the package before anyone has looked at the skin. The three positions below are the ones the clinic argues from when a patient arrives already holding a number of sessions in mind.

01One platform

There is a single device, so there is nothing to upgrade you to

Rewind holds one hair removal platform. That removes an entire category of sales conversation: the discussion in the room is about which field, what energy and how far apart the visits sit, and never about a second machine with a better name and a higher rate.

02Skin first

Your skin tone on the day decides the setting, not the one in your passport photo

Recent sun, a holiday tan, self-tanning lotion and any medication that raises light sensitivity all change what is safe to fire. Skin that is darker than usual absorbs more of the beam itself, and that is the mechanism behind most burns and most blotchy pigment after a laser session. A cautious test area first is a reasonable request in any doubtful case, and it is never treated here as an inconvenience.

03Saying no

Some fields are turned away, and some expectations are corrected

Skin freshly tanned is asked to wait. An area waxed or plucked in the preceding weeks is asked to wait too, because the root that the laser needs to find has been pulled out of it. Where growth is hormonally driven, the course is discussed differently before any money changes hands, since the same treatment on the same schedule will hold for a shorter time. A plastic surgeon has no commercial reason to sell you a package he expects to underperform.

The consultation fixes the field and the plan, then the skin is examined in the light of the room and the settings follow from what is actually there. Eye protection goes on before anything is fired, for you and for the operator, and it stays on. Ask when you book how the area should be prepared beforehand: the instruction depends on the field and it is given with your appointment, so there is no point guessing from a generic leaflet. Treatment takes place on the fourth and fifth floors of the Richro Building in Gangnam, Seoul; the clinic opens Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:00 to 19:00, and Saturday from 10:00 to 16:00, by appointment only.

One habit is worth carrying into any laser clinic anywhere. Ask which wavelength is being used on your field and ask for the setting to go into your chart. A device treatment leaves no packaging to inspect, so the record is the only thing that lets a later session be adjusted intelligently, and it is the only evidence you will have if something needs reviewing. Nobody at this clinic minds the question.

Who does well with laser hair removal, and who is asked to wait

Usually a sound plan

  • Dark hair growing in skin that is lighter than the hair, which is the contrast the whole method depends on
  • Deeper skin tones where the longer 1064 nm wavelength is the appropriate choice and the settings are adjusted accordingly
  • Anyone whose skin reacts badly to shaving or waxing the same field week after week
  • Patients willing to keep appointments spaced across months and content to be patient about it
  • Men treating a beard line or a torso field who accept that coarse hair asks for more passes

Reasons the doctor waits

  • A fresh tan from sun, a lamp or a bottle, until the colour has settled back
  • Waxing, threading or plucking in the preceding weeks, since the target has been pulled out of the follicle
  • Medication that raises sensitivity to light, which is asked about at every consultation
  • Active infection, eczema, open skin or a healing wound anywhere in the intended field
  • Pale, grey or very fine hair, where the absorber is largely absent and a course would disappoint

Aftercare

After a hair removal session: the days that matter and the weeks that follow

Rewind publishes one set of instructions for laser work, and it is short enough to remember without a leaflet. Redness in the treated field directly afterwards is expected. Sauna, steam room and sweaty exercise are kept for another day. The field is not massaged or rubbed hard. Sun protection goes on whenever you step outside.

The field commonly looks pink and feels warm for a while. Cool water and a bland moisturiser are enough. Sunscreen on any exposed field is the one instruction that is not optional.

Heat and friction paused
No sauna, no jjimjilbang, no workout that leaves you sweating through the treated field. Massage and vigorous scrubbing over the area are avoided for the same reason.
Weeks 1–3
Treated hairs work their way out
What looks like regrowth in this window is usually shedding. Shaving over the field is generally fine; plucking and waxing are the two things that undo the next appointment.
The next visit
Spaced by the cycle, not by the calendar
The interval is set so a new cohort of follicles has entered the growth phase. Your own spacing is decided at the clinic and varies by field, since the cycle is faster on a face than on a leg.

This is heat delivered into living skin and it carries real risk. Blistering, crusting and superficial burns are the ones every protocol is designed to avoid, and they are most likely on skin that was tanned or on settings that were pushed. Temporary darkening or lightening of the treated skin can follow, particularly in deeper phototypes. Folliculitis, a spotty irritation of the treated follicles, appears occasionally in the days afterwards. Paradoxical growth of finer hair at the edge of a treated field is uncommon and documented. Eye protection is worn by everyone in the room. Blistering, spreading redness or pain that climbs after you leave should be reported to the clinic immediately.

Laser hair removal: what patients travelling to Seoul ask first

Does laser hair removal hurt?
It is felt. Most patients describe a hot snap against the skin, sharpest over coarse hair and over bone, and easier on a forearm than on an upper lip. Cooling is used during treatment. Tell the operator if a spot is unusually hot, since that feedback is how settings get adjusted safely.
How many sessions will I need?
Rewind publishes no session count for this menu and none is invented here. The sheet is built in single visits and courses of five, which tells you how the clinic plans. What your field needs depends on hair colour, coarseness, skin tone and hormones, and the doctor gives you a realistic range after examining the area.
Which laser does Rewind use for hair removal?

Can I have laser hair removal on deeper or tanned skin?

No, and any clinic that says otherwise is selling you appointments too close together to work. Sessions are spaced by the hair cycle, so a course of five runs across months. Visitors usually take a single session, or begin a course and continue it on later trips; discuss that plan before buying, so the arithmetic is agreed in advance.
Is the brazilian treatment done by a female practitioner?
Ask when you book and the request will be accommodated where staffing allows. It is a routine question at every clinic that treats this area and nobody finds it awkward. The sheet prices the brazilian as the complete area including behind, so it is worth confirming coverage at the same time.
Can I use a sauna or jjimjilbang after a session?

What can go wrong?
Blistering and superficial burns are the serious risks and they rise sharply on tanned skin. Temporary darkening or lightening of the treated area can follow, especially in deeper phototypes. These five papers are the basis for the wavelength discussion on this page: the two beams compared head to head within the same patients, the longer wavelength studied across the full range of skin types, and a systematic review of what long-term reduction has actually been shown to mean after a completed course. They report on laser hair reduction as a method and not on this clinic. None of them involved Rewind Plastic Surgery or patients treated here, and no published average predicts an individual result.
